How to Measure for Custom Curtains

Follow this simple measuring guide to find the correct width and length for your custom curtains. All of our curtains are made with approximately 2x fabric fullness built in, so you do not need to double your width measurement when ordering.

Before You Measure: Use a steel tape measure and record all measurements in inches. Measure at least twice before ordering. Whenever possible, install or finalize the position of your curtain rod or track before taking your final measurements.
1

Measure the Finished Coverage Width

If your curtain rod or track is already installed, measure the usable width you want the curtains to cover.

For a decorative curtain rod, measure between the points where the curtains will actually hang. Do not include the decorative finials.

Finished Coverage Width = Usable Rod or Track Width

If the Rod Is Not Installed Yet

Measure the outside width of the window frame. For better coverage, improved light control and a more finished appearance, we generally recommend:

  • Extend the rod 6–12" beyond each side of the window
  • Mount the rod about 4–8" above the window frame , when space allows

A wider rod also provides stacking space so more of the window remains exposed when your curtains are open.

2

2x Fullness Is Already Built In

All of our custom curtains are made with approximately 2x fabric fullness by default. The additional fabric creates the soft, full folds you see when the curtains are closed.

Do not double your width measurement when ordering. Approximately 2x fabric fullness is already included in production.

Simply measure and order the finished coverage width required across your usable curtain rod or track.

Example

Finished coverage width: 76"
Approximate fabric used: 152"

76" Finished Width → Approx. 152" Fabric Used

You provide the finished coverage width. We add the extra fabric needed to create approximately 2x fullness.

Fullness is added during production—do not double your order width.

3

Measure Curtain Length

Measure vertically from the correct hanging point for your selected header style down to where you want the curtain hem to finish.

Float 0–0.5" above floor
Kiss Lightly touches floor
Puddle Add approx. 2–4"

Float — Recommended for Everyday Use

Finish approximately 0–0.5" above the floor for a clean, tailored look that is easy to maintain.

Kiss the Floor

Let the hem lightly touch or graze the floor for a softer, designer-inspired look.

Puddle

Add approximately 2–4" for a more relaxed, decorative drapery look.

Sill & Apron Length

For shorter curtains, finish approximately 0.5–1" above the sill or 4–6" below the sill.

4

Measure for Your Header Style

Grommet Top

For Grommet Top curtains, measure from the top of the curtain rod down to your desired hem position.

The finished curtain includes a small amount of fabric above the grommet opening. Because this allowance depends on the exact grommet construction, follow the final length instructions shown on the individual product page.

Pinch Pleat

For Pinch Pleat curtains hung from curtain rings, measure from the ring eyelet or hook attachment point down to your desired hem position.

If using a curtain track, measure from the track carrier or hook attachment point to the desired finished hem.

Pinch Pleat features sewn-in, evenly spaced pleats for a clean, structured and tailored drapery look.

Check the Width Label Before Ordering

Curtain products may display width in different ways. Before placing your order, check whether the product option is labeled Total Set Width or Width Per Panel.

If the product is sold as a two-panel set, follow the width definition shown directly on that product page. This helps prevent accidentally ordering twice the width you need.

Example: Measuring a Typical Window

Suppose your window frame is 60" wide and you want the curtain rod to extend 8" beyond the window on each side.

60" Window Width
+16" 8" Per Side
76" Coverage Width
60" + 8" + 8" = 76" Finished Coverage Width

Because approximately 2x fullness is already built in, do not change the 76" finished coverage measurement to 152" when ordering.

Order according to the finished coverage width shown on the product page. Do not manually double your measurement for fullness.

✓ Measuring Tips

  • Use a steel tape measure
  • Record all measurements in inches
  • Measure at least twice
  • Exclude decorative rod finials
  • Finalize rod or track position before measuring length
  • Use the correct hanging point for your selected header
  • Remember that approximately 2x fullness is already built in
  • Check whether width means total set width or per-panel width
  • Consider baseboards, furniture and floor clearance

✕ Common Measuring Mistakes

  • Measuring only the window glass
  • Including decorative finials in rod width
  • Doubling the width again for fullness
  • Measuring length before deciding rod position
  • Using the same measuring point for every header style
  • Forgetting curtain stacking space
  • Confusing total set width with per-panel width

Measuring Large Windows & Sliding Glass Doors

For large windows, patio doors and sliding glass doors, measure the entire usable curtain rod or track width instead of measuring each glass panel separately.

Allow enough wall space on both sides for the curtains to stack away from the glass when fully open. More stacking space helps maximize the clear opening and natural light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to multiply my width by 2 when ordering?

No. Our curtains are made with approximately 2x fabric fullness built in. Measure the finished coverage width you need and do not manually double it unless the individual product page specifically instructs otherwise.

What does 2x fullness mean?

Approximately 2x fullness means additional fabric is used to create the finished folds or pleats. For example, approximately 152" of fabric may be used to create around 76" of finished coverage.

Should I measure the window or the curtain rod?

If your rod or track is already installed, measure its usable width. If it is not installed, first measure the outside width of the window frame and determine how far the rod will extend beyond each side.

How far should my curtain rod extend beyond the window?

We generally recommend approximately 6–12 inches beyond each side when wall space allows. This provides better coverage and more stacking space when the curtains are open.

What is the difference between Grommet Top and Pinch Pleat?

Grommet Top curtains slide directly onto a curtain rod through metal grommets and create soft, casual folds. Pinch Pleat curtains use sewn-in pleats and drapery hooks for a more structured and tailored appearance.

How do I measure Pinch Pleat curtain length?

With curtain rings, measure from the ring eyelet or hook attachment point down to your desired hem position. With a track, measure from the track carrier or hook attachment point.

How do I measure Grommet Top curtain length?

Start by measuring from the top of the curtain rod to your desired hem position. Because the fabric allowance above the grommet depends on the product construction, follow the final ordering instructions shown on the individual product page.

Should my curtains touch the floor?

For an easy-to-maintain look, choose a Float finish approximately 0–0.5" above the floor. For a softer look, allow the curtain to lightly kiss the floor. A Puddle finish adds approximately 2–4" of extra length.

Should I include decorative finials when measuring width?

No. Measure only the usable portion of the rod where the curtains will actually hang.

What if my floor is uneven?

Measure at several points across the installation area. For floor-length curtains, choose a measurement that provides consistent clearance across the floor.
