How to Install Custom Curtains
Installing your custom curtains is simple with the right tools and a few careful measurements. Follow this step-by-step curtain installation guide to mark your mounting points, secure the curtain rod brackets, hang your curtain panels and complete the installation.
Before You Start: Confirm your curtain measurements and desired curtain rod position before drilling. Make sure both brackets will be mounted at the same height and use mounting hardware appropriate for your wall type. Not sure about placement? View our Curtain Measuring Guide .
Tools You May Need
Mark the Bracket Hole Positions
Position the curtain rod brackets and carefully mark the mounting holes before drilling.
Hold the bracket against the wall at your planned curtain rod height. Make sure the bracket is correctly positioned before marking.
Use a pencil or marker to clearly mark the center of each mounting hole. Repeat the process for the bracket on the opposite side.
Drill the Holes & Install the Brackets
Drill at the marked positions, then securely fasten each curtain rod bracket to the wall.
Drill pilot holes at the marked locations. If required for your wall type, insert suitable wall anchors before installing the screws.
Position each bracket over the prepared holes and tighten all mounting screws until the bracket sits firmly against the wall.
Install the Curtains on the Rod
Prepare your curtain panels for hanging before placing the completed curtain rod assembly onto the wall brackets.
For Grommet Top curtains, insert the curtain rod through each metal grommet in sequence. Keep the panels correctly oriented as you slide them onto the rod.
Attach the decorative finials to both ends of the curtain rod and make sure they are securely tightened before lifting the rod.
Mount the Curtain Rod onto the Brackets
Lift the assembled curtain rod into the installed brackets and make the final adjustments to complete the installation.
Carefully lift the curtain rod and place it securely into each installed wall bracket. Center the rod before making final adjustments.
Check that the rod is fully seated, then evenly distribute the curtain panels and adjust the folds for a neat finished appearance.
Installation by Curtain Header Style
The installation photos above demonstrate Grommet Top curtains. Hanging instructions vary slightly depending on your selected curtain header style.
Grommet Top Curtains
Slide the curtain rod directly through the metal grommets before mounting the rod onto the brackets. Arrange the grommets evenly to create balanced folds.
Pinch Pleat Curtains
Pinch Pleat curtains use drapery hooks. Attach the hooks to compatible curtain rings or track carriers rather than threading the curtain rod directly through the pleated fabric.

Curtain Installation FAQs
How high should I install my curtain rod?
The ideal curtain rod height depends on your window dimensions, curtain length and desired finished look. In many rooms, positioning the rod several inches above the window frame can help create a taller, more finished appearance. Confirm your measurements before drilling. For detailed measuring and placement guidance, see our Curtain Measuring Guide .
How far should the curtain rod extend beyond the window?
When wall space allows, extending the curtain rod beyond the window can improve coverage and provide additional space for the curtain panels to stack when open. The final extension depends on your window, curtain width and room layout. For detailed recommendations, see our Curtain Measuring Guide .
Do I need wall anchors to install curtain rod brackets?
Wall-anchor requirements depend on your wall construction and mounting location. Drywall, masonry, wood and other surfaces may require different fasteners. Always use mounting hardware appropriate for your specific wall type and curtain rod system.
How do I install Grommet Top curtains?
Slide the curtain rod directly through each metal grommet in sequence. Once the curtain panels are on the rod, attach the decorative finials and place the completed rod securely onto the installed wall brackets.
How do I install Pinch Pleat curtains?
Pinch Pleat curtains are normally hung using drapery hooks attached to compatible curtain rings or track carriers. Attach the hooks evenly across the curtain header and do not thread the curtain rod directly through the pleated fabric.
